The face of a software company – Petar Velev, Junior Developer

Meet SoftGroup through the eyes of its visionary employees

“The face of a software company” is a storytelling series that discovers how SoftGroup works through the eyes of our colourful and visionary employees. This story shows how from an intern with little experience, you could become a full-time developer of software solutions.

My journey at SoftGroup began with an exciting opportunity to deep dive into the world of Programming. Before joining the company, I had passed a lot of programming courses and training, which gave me some basic knowledge in the field. Three years ago, I started an internship as a developer and at the beginning of my training, I got the opportunity to develop software for one of SoftGroup’s new clients. Thanks to my knowledge and the assistance of my mentor and colleagues, I was able to implement my first software product. One year later my job has motivated me to complete a Master’s degree in programming. Although I am the youngest developer on the team, I’m constantly striving to improve my knowledge and skills and work on challenging tasks on a par with my colleagues.

Is there a typical day or week at SoftGroup?

When you are working in a big company like SoftGroup there is not a “Typical day or week”, because each day brings new challenges. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have started hybrid working – both at the office and from home, and I am used to having dynamic working days. As we are using scrum, we have all the essentials such as planning every one or two weeks and stand-up report meetings every morning. During the planning, we are dividing the tasks that we must implement, and we are assigning them to the develpers. During the stand-up meetings, we are reporting our progress. When we are not in a typical scrum meeting, we are constantly improving our software products.

Tell us a bit more about your role within the company…

I’m a Junior Developer at the company. I’m working on various projects for the development of SoftGroup software. I create installation setup files for new customers. I also make demonstrations of how the software works. I work closely with all members of the RND department. We have regular coding reviews between colleagues to optimize our code and efficiency.

What is the most challenging part of developing software solutions?

As you know SoftGroup works in the pharmaceutical industry. Аs a developer I must be familiar with all the regulations in order to be able to complete the tasks that I work on. Another challenge is to know the whole concept of the software product in order to implement the most appropriate solution. When you don’t know the final concept, you can make a mistake during development and this may be the reason for potential issues and errors in the future. This is also time-consuming because refactoring sometimes takes as much time as the initial development.

What initially motivated you to join SoftGroup?

The company impressed me with the job opportunities for candidates with little experience. In addition, it was important for me to start working in a leading Bulgarian IT company. That’s why I chose SoftGroup.

How did you find having to work from home instead of the office? Would you explore this opportunity in the future?

Definitely working at the office has more benefits. Communication with all colleagues from the team happens much faster and easier. Also, there I have a perfect desk and additional monitors that make my daily activities easier and better. And last but not least, in the office, I have an opportunity to communicate with colleagues who are also my friends. It‘s always a pleasure to begin the business day with a cup of coffee and nice conversations with the team than alone at home. However, I’m glad that the company gives us the option to work from home. The biggest advantages are waking up later and avoiding traffic. More, I’m usually much more focused when I work at home.

Finish the sentence “You should come to work at SoftGroup because….

… because of the exciting projects, a great working atmosphere and friendly colleagues.  SoftGroup is one of the few Bulgarian companies where the opinion of each employee is highly valued, regardless of his position. With us, you will have the opportunity to work independently, test new technologies and develop your skills constantly.

If you are a good developer and have a talent in sport, probably you will join our SoftGroup football team.
