Egypt Pharma Serialization: Track & Trace Timeline and Market Insights (2026)

Last updated: August 2025, with the latest rollout dates announced by the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA).

Earlier this month, the Egyptian Drug Authority officially announced in the Official Gazette the launch of Egypt’s unified national electronic system for pharmaceutical Track & Trace.

This regulation sets the timeline for the entire industry:
  • Imported & manufactured finished products – Registration begins February 2026
  • Locally produced or packed products – Registration begins August 2026

This rollout marks a turning point for Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector, which is already the largest in Africa.

Below is an overview of the current market and supply chain structure, and what the new regulation means for Marketing Authorization Holders (MAHs) and manufacturers.

Manufacturing – Egypt’s Strong Local Backbone

Egypt has one of the most localized pharmaceutical markets in the region, with 91% of products manufactured domestically:

  • 179 factories
  • 2,370 production lines
  • 1,600+ distribution companies
  • 80,000 pharmacies

This localized strength means compliance will depend on the ability of both large and mid-sized manufacturers to quickly align their systems with the new Track & Trace requirements.

Supply Chain Dynamics

The Egyptian pharmaceutical supply chain flows from MAHs and manufacturers to wholesalers, distributors, and finally to the retail sector.

  • Wholesalers (~80%) – Large, organized players . These companies operate nationwide with advanced technology and digital systems. Pharmacies typically choose wholesalers based on payment terms, service quality, and product availability. Payment models include cash, post-dated cheques, or monthly settlement, depending on the pharmacy’s credit profile.
  • Distributors (~20%) – Smaller, often sole distributors working mainly on cash-based models. This segment is less structured, heavily reliant on manual processes, and will face greater challenges adapting to serialization.

Market Snapshot

  • 12,000+ registered drug products
  • 3.5 billion units sold annually – soon to become serialized packs under Track & Trace
  • 82,000+ GLNs already active across the ecosystem
  • USD 6.2 billion market size – officially Africa’s largest pharmaceutical market

What It Means for MAHs and Manufacturers

The Egyptian rollout will occur in phases, with complete implementation anticipated within 3–5 years. But the deadlines for registration, February and August 2026, leave short time to prepare.

If you are MAH in Egypt, now is the time to:
  • Finalize your product master data
  • Ensure your systems can connect to the national platform
  • Align processes with CMOs, distributors, and partners

We’ve seen it in every market: companies that start early avoid panic, extra costs, and compliance risks.
